Project Engineer, Water Resources

Project engineers here at CEI are the daily managers of specific projects. They are in charge of producing a quality engineering product, in a reasonable time frame. This includes managing support staff, being conscious of deadlines, being aware of budgets, and providing client satisfaction. Stormwater management, aquatic habitat improvement, water supply, and wastewater collection are typical project types. A PE license in Michigan (or ability to obtain one) and a least 2 years of related experience are necessary. General Characteristics:

A Project Engineer is a fully competent engineer in all conventional aspects of typical CEI projects. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Dresses and acts like a professional.

Direction Received:

Independently performs most project work with instructions as to general results expected. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plans, schedules, conducts and coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work.
• Performs work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements. This includes both design and construction. Work requires a broad knowledge of procedures with CEI projects and good knowledge of related specialties. Handles typical client contacts on projects, resolves most project-related disputes, and is responsible for dead-lines and budget over-run explanation.
• May be involved with marketing, prepares proposals for small routine projects for review by a Project Manager. Is completely familiar with computer software pertaining to their projects. Reviews routine specification development and creates new specs.
• Responsible for construction engineering paperwork and administering surveying and testing for small to moderate projects.
• Independently prepares reports/studies for typical projects. The project engineer shall always be the person most familiar with every aspect of a project and is expected to be able to answer questions, without hesitation, regarding their projects.

Responsibilities for Direction of Others:

Supervise and coordinate the work of assistant project engineers, engineering technicians, and other employees. Coordinate and review the work of sub-consultants. May give an opinion on personnel matters especially regarding those receiving direction from them.
